Competing needs arise within any organization as employees seek to meet their targets and leaders seek to meet company goals. As a leader, successful management of these goals requires establishing priorities and allocating resources accordingly.
Within a healthcare setting, the needs of the workforce, resources, and patients are often in conflict. Mandatory overtime, implementation of staffing ratios, use of unlicensed assisting personnel, and employer reductions of education benefits are examples of practices that might lead to conflicting needs in practice.
Leaders can contribute to both the problem and the solution through policies, action, and inaction. In this Assignment, you will further develop the white paper you began work on in Module 1 by addressing competing needs within your organization.
To Prepare:
Review the national healthcare issue/stressor you examined in your Assignment for Module 1, and review the analysis of the healthcare issue/stressor you selected.
Identify and review two evidence-based scholarly resources that focus on proposed policies/practices to apply to your selected healthcare issue/stressor.
Reflect on the feedback you received from your colleagues on your Discussion post regarding competing needs.
The Assignment (4-5 pages):
Developing Organizational Policies and Practices
Add a section to the paper you submitted in Module 1. The new section should address the following:
Identify and describe at least two competing needs impacting your selected healthcare issue/stressor.
Describe a relevant policy or practice in your organization that may influence your selected healthcare issue/stressor.
Critique the policy for ethical considerations, and explain the policy’s strengths and challenges in promoting ethics.

Competing needs
One of the main competing need impacting technological interruptions is the urge to avoid medication errors by providing patients with high-quality healthcare. The measures to avoid such medication errors turn out to be costly to the hospital (Kelly & Porr, 2018). Technological interruptions have resulted in the augmentation and replacement of drugs with better treatment equipment and drugs. Evidence-based research indicates that such equipment enhances the recovery process of patients and are more effective as compared to the previously used drugs. Therefore, hospitals have to adopt the use of new drugs and equipment to ensure that they provide quality care to the patients. In addition, the use of some of the new technological equipment such as the Echo Pixel's 3D among others has turned out to be challenging to use. The physicians are bound to cause medication errors due to the lack of sufficient knowledge on how to use the equipment. In turn, the hospital will be required to offer training on how to use them. Physicians need to avoid medication errors and provide quality healthcare to the patients, yet the purchase and training provided in regard to the use of the equipment could be costly.
The need to implement the nursing staffing ratio would require the hospital to spend in hiring more nurses. At the same time, the hospital is required to purchase new technological equipment that would aid in the provision of quality healthcare to the patients. The implementation of a staffing ratio is equally important since it would reduce the chances of mandatory overtime and the delays experienced due to a huge number of patients. Given the fact that both needs are necessary for the hospital, then it becomes a challenge to adopt new technological changes.
Policy to influence technological interruption
Our organization has a policy regarding the safety and privacy of the patient's health records. After the implementation of the GetWellNetwork, the patient's healthcare information is no longer left lying in books whereby anyone can access. The new electronic record-keeping system is secure, and patients do not have to worry about their medical information being accessed by a third party. The application is secured with passwords and can only be accessed by the authorized personnel. However, in the case of a breach of security, then the patient's health information could be leaked to third parties. In such a case, the hospital will be held liable. As well, in a situation whereby information has been accessed by a third party, it is easy to identify the person responsible for the leak. According to this policy, every personnel is expected to observe all the necessary protocols to safeguard the patient's information. Therefore, this policy will influence technological interruptions by providing a secure platform whereby the hospital can store health records. The use of blockchain applications has been on the rise. For instance, insurance companies use such applications to liaise with hospitals in regard to making payments. Technological advancements would make such processes easy as compared to the manual rec...
