Despite the combined efforts of both national and international entities in the reduction of various diseases around the world, it is surprising that some of the most widespread fatal illnesses happen, not due to the lack of access to health care, but because of the inefficiency of its current systems. These inefficiencies have shown itself in the form of nosocomial infections, with Catheter-related Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTIs) being the most prevalent among them. CAUTI infections are infections that happen due to prolonged (or improper) use of urinary catheters, which are tubes “inserted into the bladder through the urethra to drain urine” (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, n.d.). In fact, in according to recent data collected about nosocomial infections in a hospital CAUTIs have a mortality rate of 57.4%, which is the highest among any other nosocomial infections out there (Keten et al., 2014). Adding to this, it is said that about 15% to 25% of hospitalized patients require catheterization due to inability to move or control body impulses, thus making this a more immediate concern for all stakeholders (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, n.d.). As of today, some of the conventional methods used by different organization around the world to reduce CAUTI cases amongst their patients are (1) reduction of catheterization time, (2) administration of antibiotics to lessen bacterial growth, and (3) developing different administrative tools in order to make sure that catheters would only be required for those who really need it. Thanks to these methods, the numbers of CAUTI cases in the previous years have lessened in most places in the world. However, since the numbers have already started to spike once again, it is apparent that there is a need for other solutions that would help in numbers reduction.
