Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) a respiratory disease emerged in December 2019, Hubei Province in Wuhan, China and this became the epicenter of a pneumonia like disease of unknown causes (Bogoch et al., 2020). A group of patients were admitted to different hospitals with diagnoses of pneumonia of unknown etiology. This was later linked to a 'wet markets’ for live animals, unprocessed fish and shellfish in Wuhan (Bogoch et al., 2020). Acute respiratory distress syndrome it was only in January 2020 that it became known that there was person-to-person transmission of COVID-19 and the Chinese authorities reported they had identified a new type of coronavirus now known as COVID-19. The number of infected patients increased exponentially in mainland China and internationally and has now reached million and almost half million deaths. COVID-19 has a high transmission rate, but disproportionately affects older adults, and preventive seeks to limit and reduce contact between those infected and others.
There is a high rate of COVID-19 person-to-person transmissions and they are now confirmed cases of across the world. While there are those who have had mild symptoms and others asymptomatic, older adults and especially elderly men seem to be worse affected from complications. Additionally, in the US, the underserved communities have been hard hit including poor urban areas where there is disproportionate infection rates and deaths. The World Health organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 as a public health emergency of international concern on January 30, 2020 (WHO, 2020).
The CDC (2020) reported that COVID-19 can result in severe complications “including hospitalization, admission to an intensive care unit, and death, especially among older adults”.
