Research variables are broadly divided between dependent and independent variables. Dependent variables are those whose value depends on the changes in the value of an independent variable or cause. On the other hand, an independent variable is the “cause” or the changes whose values are not dependent on any other variable or factor within the scope of research (Remenyi, 2018). In other words, an independent variable is a cause while a dependent variable is its effect.
The relationship between dependent and independent variables is either correlation or causation. Often confused, these terms have a subtle nuance. Correlation indicates a statistical relationship between research variables, which necessarily indicates that the change in the value of a variable is actually caused by another variable.
