The human resource problem often creates heavy workloads for nurses, exposing them to adverse implications such as nurse burnout and subsequent low job satisfaction. High nurse turnover rates and nursing shortage also correlate to the increasing cost of healthcare witnessed in most healthcare systems worldwide. These human resource challenges tend to increase the cost of recruitment and training of newly-hired nurses, reflecting in the increased cost of healthcare across different healthcare systems. Such occurrences limit the ability of healthcare systems around the globe to deliver the key objective of safe and quality patient care. It is, therefore, imperative for both the nurse leaders and nurse managers to develop effective interventional measures to address the human resource problem facing the global healthcare sectors. Among the strategic approaches for addressing the human resource problem in health is the development and adoption of effective motivational approaches by the nursing leadership and management. It is advisable for nursing leadership and management to identify both the intrinsic and extrinsic factors affecting the performances of nurses and other healthcare professionals. Intrinsic factors influencing the performance of healthcare professionals are characteristic of the personal values and beliefs that drive the healthcare professionals’ actions toward the delivery of the quality patient care. On the other hand, extrinsic factors are the external elements within the healthcare workplace environment that inform the actions of healthcare professionals in the delivery of patient care. Provided herein is a detailed proposal highlighting some of the performance indicators toward developing an effective motivational plan for healthcare professionals based on a strategic system of rewarding and providing incentives for better performance.
