In 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic broke across the globe, there has been debate about how the virus would become contained. However, most people lost their lives due to the virus worldwide. It created a severe fear among people, and the healthcare organizations came up with measures to keep the virus under control. This paper looks deep into how cultural competency has a crucial role during the pandemic period and how wide the pandemic affected people, and who was affected by the disease significantly (those who are at high risk).
As a COVID-19 containment measure, it became known that several people are at a higher risk of contracting the virus, which is an infectious disease faster than others. When the health practitioners analyzed this, they discovered that low-income earners, prison population, immigrant communities, homeless, elderly, and the people living with an underlined condition were at a high risk of becoming infected (Bailey, 2020). The above-listed people living conditions are among people highly affected by the virus. People with diabetes, HIV, hypertension, among other long-term illnesses, categorized as people living with underlined conditions, are under a severe threat of the disease due to minimal body immunity. The other listed living conditions based on the cultural wellbeing of people in a society.
Cultural competency applies whereby people understand the different cultural differences among themselves, and they are ready to explore where people exist in a diverse kind of environment. With cultural competency, much can become controlled quickly whereby everyone diversely understands each other under mutual understanding (Bailey, 2020). Healthcare providers require cultural competency to deal with a different group of people. For instance, the homeless at Boston Medical Center (BMC) occupied the health facility, which led to a need to increase the capacity of more space to accommodate all the people.
