Introduction
Coronavirus pandemic has upended almost all human activities and interactions ranging from socialization to healthcare provision. Taming the Covid-19 virus has necessitated countries to institute measures that will curb the spread of the virus while at the same time guarantee people seamless interaction. However, the stringent measures imposed by governments have culminated into mixed reactions. For example, in Cuba, the restriction about travelers bringing food, medicines, and hygiene products amounted to anti-government demonstrations. The involvement of the military to calm the situation has elicited a heated debate. On the one hand, military intervention during a crisis has been viewed as subverting people’s rights. Conversely, permitting people to carry on with demonstrations without military intervention is a good way of practicing democracy. The Cuban government has been brutal to its citizens since time immemorial. Perhaps it is the right time to relook how the Cuban government can utilize broad discussions among different stakeholders to ensure people’s rights and properties are protected during a crisis.
Military Intervention in Crisis Management– a leading Cause for Unfair Trial and Hearing
Military intervention in the Cuban crisis subverted the right to fair trial and hearing. Many people were taken out of their houses and detained without committing any crime. According to Human Rights Watch (2021), at least 500 people have vanished mysteriously without leaving any mark of being traced. To complicating the situation, children under the age of 16 years were given a military uniform and forced to terrorize Cubans to calm the crisis. Subversion of these human rights means that Cubans are left helpless and serves as a tactic to compel people to change positions about forging ahead with a demonstration about government directives on healthcare. The bottom line is that this strategy negatively affects children and adults in equal measure.
Military intervention as a Tool for Advancing arbitrary Detention and Short-Term Imprisonment
The Cuban government’s undemocratic character has remained unchanged despite various political strides experienced between 2018 and 2019. Cuba has been characterized by arbitrary detention and short-term imprisonment. Military involvement in crisis management has bred arbitrary detention leading to harassment and intimidation of critics and independent activists. According to BBC (2021), many people were kidnapped by the police since the protest began and their whereabouts remain scanty. Additionally, media personnel have been harassed, detained, and defamed since Cuba has state-owned media. The result of these approaches has always been tragic. For example, protestors who were unarmed and tried to defend themselves were killed by a bullet.
