IOM Future of Nursing
The institute of Medicine is involved in improving the future of nursing to bring in change and advanced health systems. To achieve this, IOM made several recommendations (Gooch, 2015). The recommendations touched on nurse’s roles, their responsibilities and education. The recommendations ensured that the nurses meet the increased healthcare demands and the ever changing and complex health system.
Among the recommendations touching on nurses, number one was to increase the proportion of nurses with a baccalaureate degree to 80% by 2020. The education sectors charged with nursing education including The Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action, nursing education community and state systems of higher education were encouraged to continue working together to strengthen pathways in order increase the number of nurses attaining baccalaureate degree. The collaboration of the nurses’ education system offers a better ground for advancement of my education as well as a better environment for continuous learning. It offers an opportunity for me to attain a baccalaureate degree with ease (IOM, nd).
The recommendation by IOM to promote and double the number of nurses with a doctorate by 2020 is great idea. To accommodate more nurses’ incentives and expansion of programs should be offered to accommodate more nurses. Through this programs and incentives, we can easily get opportunities to learn and achieve the doctorate degrees. The major purpose for increasing the number of nurses with doctorate is to ensure that healthcare has adequate supply of nurses for the different responsibilities including clinical care, research and leadership positions. The recommendations provide an opportunity for us to pursue these degrees early in our careers. This is a benefit for us as well as the healthcare system because we will be able to maximize the potential value of the additional education.
