In the medical field, professionals acquire multiple studies, training, and work experiences for many reasons. It can be rank or position, salary grade, or title. Part of refining their professional capabilities is practicing it in an actual field. It means that medical professionals are deployed in a practice setting where they carry out their respective duties. Practice setting is the workspace where medical professionals of all ranks and titles practice their medical commitment. The setting may be solo, group, or in partnership with freelance medical professionals (Masters, 2019).
The practice setting from the Belbin profile is a collaboration of medical professionals in attending to patients from communities. According to Masters (2019), this type of practice can be single-specialty practice or multispecialty practice. These two practice settings differ in the kind of medical service they offer; they are defined as their names suggest. The single-specialty practice setting has medical professionals that are experts and specializes in a particular care service. For instance, there are health institutions that specialize in cardiology, pediatrics, pulmonology, etc. On the other hand, the practitioners in a multispecialty practice setting are from different expertise. This practice setting offers health care from different branches of medicine. One multispecialty practice setting can consist of almost all the medical specializations, and from consultants to surgeons (Acponline, 2018; Masters, 2019).
This practice set is economically advantaged because of its capacity to accommodate patients. Larger capacity means a higher chance of financial stability of a health institution. It can hire enough medical professionals to tend to a large number of admitted patients; they provide the institution enough fund for equipment pieces, and development of both the institution and its health workers. For practitioners, this setting gives them a wider connection to other medical practitioners and specialists. For instance, a surgeon works with several nurses, radiologists, anesthesiologists, etc. It allows them to collaborate with them and experience their work ethics. Another advantage is that having enough attending physicians and other health providers give a healthier working space for them. Their duty hours can give them enough rest time (Acponline, 2018; Masters, 2019).
However, having many heads in a team is having many minds working. This is the disadvantage of this practice setting; there may occur a difference in opinion and decisions. Although the primary concern of medical professionals is the patients well being, they may argue on what to prioritize in the patient's being -- the physical injury or psychological stability? There may also be a conflict in deciding what medical branch or specialization to give more attention, especially in a multispecialty practice setting. All health issues and concerns need proper attention but medication cannot always be done all at once.
