Worker Safety Initiative Proposal
Introduction and History
Hospitals and other healthcare facilities are dangerous places to work. According to the OSHA 2011 report, there were 253,000 reported cases of medical care related injuries in the US (OSHA, 2014). The history of the worker safety initiative can be traced to the implementation in the UK in the wake of the 20th century (Simons, Leroy, & Savage, 2013). Translating the figures to a global perspective calls for the need to optimize hospital safety culture. Worker safety and quality of care are two inseparable aspects that determine the patient safety. When doctors and nurses are working in an unsafe environment, the chances of inflicting injuries to patients are high. The other aspect that the proposal suggests being emphasized is a safety that deals with the ability of the health care facilities to offer the services that are safe and reliable to the patients. The services to be offered should solve the patients’ issues without any medical faults. It implies the recruitment or employment of competent and experienced health care professionals who can use and diagnose faulty medical equipment (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health., 2012). The principle goes alongside the aspect of personal safety responsibility and accountability among the medical staff.
Benefits of Worker Safety Initiative
The long-term benefits include the improvement of patient handling as the environment of nursing or medical practice is safe and the equipment used is certified to be safe. It also ensures effective disaster recovery and business continuity as it involves the ways of improving injury record keeping and the use of IT systems (OSHA, 2013). Other long-term benefits include the increment of hospital reputation and lowering the cost of compensating to nurses. Short te...
