ATP is not a chemical energy storage molecule. This function is performed by carbohydrates like fats and glycogen (Britannica, 2022). Each time a cell requires energy, it breaks the bonds between gamma and beta phosphate (phosphoanhydride bonds) to produce adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and a free phosphate molecule (Mahundi & Manwa, 2017). ADP and the free phosphate combine using excess energy stored in a cell to form ATP. ATP then breaks down through ATP hydrolysis to release the chemical energy stored within the phosphate bonds, which are high in energy (Mahundi & Manwa, 2017). This process is activated by an electrical impulse, causing the last phosphate group to separate from the ATP molecule and releasing adequate energy used for biological reactions and bodily functions.
