According to the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse (2018), in the year 2018, San Diego, Unified School District had 500, 000 of its records compromised through hacking. In this case, the type of breach was hacking or malware. The information breached included the details of former students and workers in the institution. The hacker gained access to crucial information including their personal details like their addresses through phishing emails.
Hacking of databases comes with great consequences which are suffered by the involved organizations and those whose details are accessed. The social security numbers of some of the students and staff were affected. The Los Angeles Times reports that almost 50 staff members’ accounts were breached and had to be reset (Taketa, 2018). Therefore, given that private information was exposed, it is evident that the incident had significant consequences.
