Political ideologies of parties influence health policies to a great extent. By guiding political institutions, ideologies influence health through economic and social policies. The two major political parties in the US, Republican and Democratic parties, correspond to conservative and liberal ideologies respectively. The view of Democrats and Republicans on Affordable Care Act (ACA) that became law in 2010 can be used to explain the differences in ideologies as they relate to cardiovascular disease (CVD). CVD has been impacted significantly by ACA since its enactment. Since signed into law, ACA has contributed to a significant increase in the prevalence of counseling and screening of CVD risk factors including type 2 diabetes, blood pressure, smoking, and cholesterol (Pool, Akhabue, & Carnethon, 2018). As informed by Alcalá, et al. (2015), the increased access to insurance as a result of ACA is a key step towards reducing CVD rates. However, since President Trump came into office in 2017, there have been efforts to repeal the act.
