Extensive evidence has shown that obesity impacts health negatively. Obesity has been associated with an increased risk of certain chronic diseases of lifestyle. These diseases include hypertension and heart disease. In addition, obesity and being overweight have been shown to increase the risk of certain types of cancers. Some examples are colon and pancreatic cancers. Other complications of obesity include sleep apnea and digestive problems. Evidence has also revealed that individuals with obesity/ being overweight are likely to experience more severe symptoms of covid 19 compared to individuals with normal weight. It is clear from these illustrations that obesity/ being overweight has numerous negative impacts on an individual's health.
Obesity/ being overweight refers to a situation where an individual's weight is considered to be higher than normal. Categorization of an individual as obese/ overweight requires certain measures. The most common measure is the body mass index. This measure compares a person's weight to their height and then categorizes them as underweight, normal, overweight, or obese. Individuals are considered overweight if their body mass index is between 25 and 30 (World Health Organization, 2021). If the body mass index is more than 30, the individual is considered obese (World Health Organization, 2021). There are several ways through which individuals may become overweight or obese. If the process were to be simplified, one would say that these conditions occur when the caloric input exceeds the caloric output. The main cause of obesity is a high intake of energy-dense food. In addition to energy-dense foods, obesity may also be brought about by genetic factors. A person with a family history of obesity is considered at higher risk than one without. Some disease conditions may also precipitate obesity. Such conditions include hypothyroidism and insulin resistance.
