One of the main problems regarding child care is the inadequate balancing between the child’s nutritional needs. At times, even the parent’s desire to keep their children healthy could lead to adverse problems like childhood obesity. Although there have been a lot of information drives, seminars, and even publicly available resources regarding the proper maintenance of a child’s health, there exist a lot of barriers that make it difficult for parents to follow the same.
Accordingly, in the qualitative study done by Heller et al. (2021), the authors wanted to determine the exact nature of these barriers that prevent parents from adhering to standards of diet and nurturing, such as early childhood feeding and obesity prevention practices. Through the use of phone interviews and a semi-structured script, they were able to find out from healthcare and education providers that some of the most common reasons as to why children (0 to 2 years old) suffers from obesity are either because of their lack of knowledge of the same or because of external ‘advice’ or ‘tips’ about feeding patterns that they are able to find from external sources (i.e., social media influencers). In turn, this misconception leads to problems like “overfeeding tendencies, early initiation of solids or less optimal feeding practices, lack of autonomy and self-regulation by child, and suboptimal dietary patterns” (Heller et al., 2021).
