Treatment of Anxiety
Define Treatment Refractory Anxiety
Treatment refractory anxiety refers to the condition where anxiety disorder therapy is not responsive after successful application; the outcome may be modest or ineffective (Vicario et al.,2019). Modestly ineffective refers to a slight response to therapy but with no remission. The cause and basic treatment responses to anxiety make it a difficult condition to handle.
Two Common Comorbidities of Treatment Refractory Anxiety
The most common comorbidities of treatment-refractory anxiety are generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and substance use disorder (SUD). Out of the two, GAD is the most common. Vicario (2019) notes that most anxiety patients are into substance abuse, leading to substance use disorder (SUD). Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is prolonged and uncontrolled anxiety about common things like family, work, and money. It is a condition where the person flows from one worry to the next, leading to poor life management and inadequacy in normal activities (Vicario, 2019). Most Patients with GAD are unaware of their illness and often try to ease their anxiety by self-medication through alcohol and illicit drugs. Indeed, anxiety and depression should be handled in time as they affect the patient's functionality and life.
Two Possible Approaches to Treatment for Treatment Refractory Anxiety
The two possible approaches to the treatment of refractory anxiety are serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) (Fleming et al.,2018). Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) treat various disorders, including cognitive, phobic, and physiological symptoms. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) includes behavioral, physiological, and cognitive therapy approaches (Fleming et al.,2018). Progressive muscle relaxation, exercises, and training are designed to correct cognitive distortions, calm the patient, and stop hyperarousal.
