To improve population health, healthcare professionals need to focus on prevention principles. This fact has been recognized in nursing and education, and one of the essentials of a master's education in nursing is clinical prevention and population for improving health (American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), 2011). It ensures that nurses engage in evidence-based preventative approaches to effectively reduce diseases and their associated disability and death.
Through the graduate education program, I have been prepared to meet the diverse needs of a diverse patient population. Specifically, the program has prepared me to identify and apply evidence-based approaches in the prevention of disease. I have learned how to evaluate the available evidence to establish the best evidence and how I can incorporate it into my everyday practice.
This is evident in my practicum project on early dysphagia screening among stroke patients to reduce the risk of aspiration pneumonia. It has been established that dysphagia is a risk factor for aspiration pneumonia among stroke patients, and early detection of aspiration pneumonia can reduce associated pulmonary complications and death (Sivertsen et al., 2017; Palli ...
