The field of healthcare today are often faced with ethical decisions that have far-reaching effects on the health and well-being of the people who use the healthcare system. The field has been traditionally defined by a Judeo- Christian worldview, which has often been at odds with the dominant postmodern culture of today. This has left healthcare practitioners with few options when faced with ethical dilemmas. While there have been attempts to reconcile the two conflicting worldviews, such as the Health Care Paradox, the Postmodern Health Care framework, and the Health Care Creed, the current state of healthcare ethics still revolves around the Judeo-Christian worldview.
The Christian perspective of the nature of spirituality and ethics follows the belief that the world is governed by a just God. In this perspective, the world is a broken place, and man is responsible for this brokenness. In this sense, God has a plan to redeem the world, and one of the means that he did is through the cross. The cross is the place where the redemptive plan comes to fulfillment. It is the place where the divine plan of salvation is acted out. At the cross, man's sin is forgiven, and their relationship with God is completely restored. Because of Jesus's work on the cross, man can now be restored to his original state of righteousness and has his original relationship with God. From the Christian perspective, you learn men are inherently wrong and sinful in their judgments and they have to rely on God's standard of morality as being objective (Paipais, 2021). On the other hand, the postmodern perspective fundamentally disagrees with the notion that there is a God who is going to judge us and restore us to our original state of righteousness. This worldview believes that individuals are responsible for their goodness or badness, and morality is relative to the culture in which they live. In healthcare, medical professionals employ one or both of these worldviews in making decisions, but the Christian perspective has always been the priority.
