Statistical knowledge is crucial in all economic, social, or political sectors. It helps in the routine running of the organizations proving useful for decision-making. I work in a hospital setting that significantly uses statistical knowledge derived from statistical data like other sectors. This data is collected from various hospital activities and records, including administrative databases, patient surveys, and medical records. The data is used to monitor local healthcare conditions and compare them to state, national and global trends. The data is then used to measure the performance outcomes in the healthcare facility.
Data in the hospital setting is collected through administrative databases, patient surveys, and medical records. Administrative databases are generated from routine services offered to clients in the hospital jurisdiction. It consists of the data generated in the characteristics of the population the hospital serves. The data is collected from enrollments, claims, encounters, and provider systems (Data sources for Health Care Quality measures 2018). The common data elements in administrative databases are locations of services, number of units, service type, diagnosis and procedures for medical services, and the amount reimbursed or billed.
Patient survey is the second way of collecting statistical knowledge in a hospital setting. It consists of information from patients regarding their healthcare experiences, including reports on treatment received, care services, and perceptions of the care outcomes (Data sources for Health Care Quality measures 2018). The survey used in collecting the data is often administered to a sample of patients through phone calls, emails, or other online platforms like websites.
Patient medical records is the third source of statistical data in hospital settings.
