1 What influences mental health professionals to stigmatize people with schizophrenia?
There is much evidence that suggests that people hold negative attitudes, beliefs and always want to socially distance themselves from those that are thought to be suffering from Schizophrenia. Stigma emanating from mental health stigmatization has been seen as a recurring issue that impacts several people like families, friends, individuals, organizations and associated with the victim. The general public often associates schizophrenia with violence, incompetence and dangerousness. Such stigma is experienced by 40% of the victims of schizophrenia and negatively impacts on the self-esteem, mental health, quality of life and suicidal experiences (Sheehan, 2017). Likewise, some mental health professionals also hold stigmatizing beliefs towards diverse range of mental health disorders.
To start with, medical health practitioners that had had lived experiences with mental health issues had minimal desires to social distance and instead had more positive reviews about people living with schizophrenia (Corrigan, Druss & Perlick, 2014).
Mental health practitioners that were in favor of the biological model as a cause of schizophrenia had more negative attitudes were less emphatic and dehumanized victims of schizophrenia. Moreover, practitioners working in psychiatric wards are usually more stigmatizing compared to those living in community settings (Adjorlolo, 2014).
How will you educate your patients and family about the illness of schizophrenia?
In the management of schizophrenia, both family and patients need learn certain things to help in the management process. Since the patient is the custodian of the condition, he or she should acquire knowledge that can aid his or her recovery. First the mental health practitioner should teach the patient relaxation techniques including deep breathing, mindfulness and progressive muscle relaxation. Second, the patient should be encouraged to undertake daily exercises, maintain balanced and healthy diet, avoid drugs and alcohol and seek social support apart from the service he/she gets from caregivers (Harvey & Hanlon, 2013).
On the part of family, I would educate family members to always start seeking treatment of schizophrenia from the onset of the disease.
