United Healthcare Group
An interview with David Wichmann the CEO of United Healthcare Group about the organizational risk management of the organization resulted in the following report that highlighted the challenges faced by group in the control of infectious diseases.
Increased reporting requirements
Individuals should have knowledge about the different agencies and entities that oversee infections reporting standards. Furthermore, the federal Affordable Care Act has resulted in the promulgation of the new regulations that govern prevention of the infection (Bates, Saria, Ohno-Machado, Shah, & Escobar, 2014). David noted that these requirements and especially the frequent changes to the standards proved to be a major challenge in the facilities efforts to curb the spread of infectious diseases.
Limited time to accomplish many goals
Due to the increase of the data reporting responsibilities, individuals have a difficult time to handle different initiatives such as the setting up of proper safety programs for patients which would help improve hygiene and lower the resistance of antibiotics. The caregivers can improve efficiency through collaboration with several departments to improve the safety of patients (Bates, Saria, Ohno-Machado, Shah, & Escobar, 2014). For instance they can work effectively with the pharmacy team to oversee how antibiotic are used, collaborating with nurses to monitor hygiene practices and isolation.
Infection surveillance inefficiencies
The healthcare group still uses manual infection surveillance system which results in individuals spending a lot of time sifting through the culture of paper reports to identify infections. The manual system delays the population of the reports making the opportunities to be limited (Bates, Saria, Ohno-Machado, Shah, & Escobar, 2014). There is therefore a need for the healthcare group to use an infection surveillance system which is automated. The automated technology will facilitate effective data collection.
Responsibility without budgetary authority
The healthcare group is challenged financially because of a tight budget which then hampers the adoption of new and better systems for surveillance and prevention of infections.
The Risk management strategies
Hand hygiene is the simplest approach to the prevention of the infectious diseases. Individuals should wash their hands before undertaking procedures and sterile gloves should also be used. Secondly, environmental surface is the common source of infection transmission. The environment should be disinfected and kept clean. There is need to maintain a clean and sanitary environment. Hygiene teams should also be included. Patients should undergo constant screening. Patients should undergo treatment before surgery or an...
