Patient fall is a major problem in most U.S. hospitals. According to Heng et al. (2020), more than one million sick persons are victims of this issue each year. Patient falls cause almost 250,000 injuries and 11,000 deaths. The above information is supported by statistical data, which indicate that 2% of ill persons fall at least once during hospitalization. Therefore, this issue is widespread across the U.S.
Concerning the patient fall issue, this paper will focus on Scarlet Haven Residential Service (SHRS). This medical facility provides multiple living support to individuals diagnosed with intellectual and developmental disabilities (Overbey et al., 2021). The hospital aims to create communities where persons with the mentioned disorders are supported by maximizing functions using various resources. Patient falls are common due to the nature of this health center's clients. Staff members are trained to identify such risks and treat victims. According to Walusinski (2019), in the last five years, SHRS has witnessed several fall cases. 79% of these issues were unassisted, while 85% of the fall cases occurred in patients' rooms. The author adds that the mentioned issues were mainly evident in the evening and during the night. 59% of the fall cases happened during these periods.
The most common fall cases reported in SHRS are accidental. This complicates 2% of the hospital stay for patients. Bailey et al. (2022) support the above information and add that the average fall for patients in this medical facility is approximately 12 in every 1,000. However, this varies based on the unit the patient is admitted. 25% of these fall cases result in injury, while 2% cause fractures on wrists, arms, and ankles. Nevertheless, no death has been reported in this medical facility due to this issue. Morris et al. (2022) note that besides the impacts of falls mentioned above, the problem increases the medical cost. The patient's duration or stay at the health center is also prolonged. Research supports this statement by indicating that falls increase the victims' stay in the facility for 6 to 12 days.
