Week 5 Discussion : Measuring Goal Achievement (Special Education)

Essay Instructions:

Read Vignette 8.4 on p. 276 of the text Behavior Management: Principles And Practices of Positive Behavior Support. The vignette describes a plan for a 9-year-old boy, Calvin James, who receives special services due to diagnosis of autism. One of Calvin's IEP goals for the year was to increase his social interaction from a baseline of 10 minutes a day (which is 2.5% of the school day) to 20 minutes a day (representing 5% of the school day).

Reflect on the following questions:
To determine success of the IEP goal, what additional information might you want to know about the plan itself? What might "Goal Theory” contribute to designing and assessing an intervention such as the one described?
If the broader IEP goal was to enhance social interaction, how might a multi-contextual approach to measurement be informative?
How might the program plan have been developed to ensure "quality of life” and "self-determination”? What might you suggest as "next steps” to maintain the behavior (or perhaps even to increase the target) in the future?.
Include APA formatted references in your response.
