Being a teacher is a lifetime commitment into making the world a better place and into ensuring a productive generation with thorough and severe skills, passion, dedication and commitment in one’s ambition. It is a teacher who makes that innocent boy settles for becoming a successful medical doctor just like it is a teacher who makes that girl realizes she can become a very passionate engineer. It is this unique and all fulfilling responsibility that makes teachers, particularly early childhood teachers, to have a great weight in the journeys of all the learners that they come into contact with. Early childhood teachers are the persons a child comes in contact with after their all loving, caring and protective parents. The teachers therefore have to make learning at that stage become fun and exciting. They must ensure that the learners are comfortable and that they look forward to coming back the following day. A proper and elaborate philosophy of education helps achieve this. But what is a philosophy of education and why do we need it so bad?
A philosophy of education is a statement that identifies and clarifies the beliefs, values and understandings of an individual group with respect to education. It serves as a tool that guides the path of learning both for the teacher and the learner, (Scots College). It is a sensitive area as it affects the society in the long run. This is because teachers play a major role in determining the learners’ careers and identities. Values learnt from the teacher by learners are the same values they will uphold and apply in their lives when they are old enough. If the teacher believes in questioning existing facts and finding satisfying evidence, it is highly probable that the learners will also do that. Understanding that helps us understand that as teachers we have profound effect on our learners’ future decisions.
Secondly, we need to understand that a philosophy of education is a powerful tool to model a society in becoming united and objective in their way of life. This could be achieved through relevant strategies which may relate to the learners’ way of life and the way they perceive actions. It helps cultivate values and abilities that helps the learner realize their true potential (Siegel, 2018). It is common knowledge that students don’t all learn in the same rate. This should not be an escape plan for an early childhood teacher. It should be the point of focus instead. The teacher should work on ensuring that despite all the differences, all students receive proper, well-tailored and benefiting education that will not only open their eyes to the existing circumstances but also probe them into making a difference by going an extra mile...
