The Concept of Recovery in Mental IllnessIntroduction
In recent years, more focus is given to the recovery process in the field of mental health. In this paper, an analysis of the CHIME model of recovery is done. The pros and cons of this model and the recovery process are critically analyzed. This strategy enables us to develop an informed opinion related to the existing issues related to the concept of recovery from mental illness.
Concept of Recovery Approach
Individualistic recovery approach is based on an individualistic relationship. In 1993, Anthony provided the world with a classic definition of recovery. Where he described recovery as a personal and a unique process of changing an individual’s attitudes, feelings, values, skills, roles, and goals. Recovery is a way in which an individual lives a life with satisfaction and hope while having limitations caused by mental illness. In the process of recovery, a new meaning of life and hope is developed and gives an individual a purpose of life. It happens because the mentally ill person lives and grows beyond the catastrophic effects of illness.
This definition of recovery is based on the intrapsychic process. It occurs when a person is able to overcome their mental illness by limiting their thoughts, beliefs, and feelings. In a research study by Slade & Longden (2015), researchers emphasized that the recovery of a person from mental illness is best determined by the person living with the experience. The four key features of recovery postulated by them is that the person is either fully recovered or either is in the recovery process. Recovery is observable; therefore, it is objective in nature rather subjective. Patients cannot determine that they have recovered from mental illness or not. It is solely determined by the clinician whether an individual has recovered or not. The last key feature of recovery stated that it does not vary from an individual to an individual for every individual recovery process the same.
Pros of Model with Lived Experience
The recovery process is now more improved as compared to the 1990s era. One of the most popular models of the recovery process is CHIME framework. The acronym for CHIME is based on connectedness, which refers to an individual’s relationships with people in society and community. Hope refers to an individual’s belief related to mental illness and support from members of society that they will get better. Identity refers to defining and reshaping the beliefs and attitude, meaning in life and empowerment refers to a sense of control over things in the emotional, physical and cognitive aspect of mind. In a research study by Brijnath (2015), a CHIME framework is utilized to understand its usage. Culturally diverse groups were treated with depression using CHIME. The findings of the research stated that most of the people were able to recover from depression. Stigma appeared to be one of the problems related to mental health issues. It is evident from a research study by Vass, Sitko, West & Bentall (2017), that stigma hinders the recovery process. To overcome the hindrance in the recovery process, internalized sti...
