Humans are social creatures and cannot live without interacting with others. On that note, a language is a powerful tool that facilitates learning and communication. Students learn about the relationships of letters to sounds as well as the structure and meaning of words to help them in reading and spelling.
Reading, writing, and spelling are essential in the ability of students to master effective communication. Without learning the relationship between letters and sounds, it would be challenging to know how to pronounce and read words. The foundation of knowing how to read words, phrases, and sentences comes from understanding letters and their respective sounds (“Oral and Visual Communication Continuum,” n.d.). Specifically, it is after students’ mastery of letters and words that they know how to write.
