Continue to observe and collaborate with your mentor teacher on the elements that help create a positive, safe, and productive learning environment outlined in Clinical Field Experience A. With the assistance of your mentor teacher, select a small group or whole group activity you could lead.
Use any remaining field experience hours to assist the teacher in providing instruction and support to the class.
In 500-550 words, write a summary about your experiences leading the whole or small group of students through an activity. The following information should be addressed in your summary:
The transitions used to get students ready to begin the activity
The learning objective for the activity
How you assessed student learning for the objective
Strategies you used to engage students in the lesson
Verbal and nonverbal cues you used to redirect students and keep them engaged

A role-play was used to enhance the understanding of students on dealing with patients with mental illness. Getting the students ready for role-playing involved defining the problem and the nursing situation. The students understood that the role-play was about how nurses can enhance therapeutic communication when dealing with mental health patients. One way of engaging students in the lesson was connecting learning with the real world. The role play enabled the nursing students to know how it “feels” when dealing with patients. Another way was through collaboration, where students worked together in small groups. The move allowed them to benefit from each other’s perspectives.
Both verbal and non-verbal cues were used to ensure the students remained engaged. Verbal cues included fewer words to ensure that the learners can continue with the activity. For instance, phrases like “I would like you to…, do not do that…, kindly…, and let’s remain focused…” were used to give direction and ensure that students remain focused on the activity. Nonverbal cues were instrumental in providing directives without having to stop the role play. Hand signals were used to tell students to start, continue, stop, stand up, and listen, among others.
