Child Development
Nature or nurture? This question has been asked countless of times when talking about child development. Nature, or genetic, factors are often out of control. But the environment a child lives in can be adjusted or, at least, tweaked.
Before going further into the factors that can affect a child’s development and learning, let us first look at the domains of child development.
Child Development Domains
There are five major domains of child development. These domains can, of course, be broken down into more specific domains. ( CITATION Lig18 \l 13321 (Lightfoot, Cole, & Cole, 2018)p.53) But for our purposes, the five major domains will suffice. They are:
Physical
This domain deals with the physical and motor attributes of the child. It is also where attributes like strength, speed, and coordination come into play. Developing the physical domain is somewhat straightforward. Having ample time to play around and exercise will be enough to develop this domain.
Intellectual
The Intellectual domain deals with cognitive traits. It is not a direct measure of intelligence, per se. it deals with the way the child learns and thinks. It can also be a way to see how the child’s mind or thought process works. In order to develop the intellectual domain, reading and solving puzzles are great activities.
Emotional
The expression of one’s feelings is a huge part of the emotional domain of development. While learning how to develop emotionally, the child will also learn how to respond appropriately to certain events or situations. He or she will also be able to recognize his or her emotions—and that of others—much easier. This domain is a bit harder to develop as it is dependent on the person feeling it. But one good practice is to let the child express their feelings freely and without judgment or conflict.
Social
Man is a social animal. Everyone lives with others. So, even a child will have to learn how to deal with other people, one way or another. This includes everyone that the child may interact with. If this domain is developed in conjunction with the emotional domain, the child will find socializing with others that much easier.
Moral
Everyone should learn the difference between what is right and what is wrong. It is often during childhood when this domain of morality develops. This domain deals with not only the choices the child will make but also the consequences of those choices. Teaching the child the effects of his or her actions can often lead to better development of this domain.
Factors that Affect a Child’s Development
There are multiple factors that can affect how a child develops. And these factors will have an effect on one or more of the major domains of child development. Of course, some of these factors can be taught while others cannot. As said before, there are two ideas, or sides, that may dominate a child’s development. But, as with many other things, it is not a dichotomy. You don’t have to be one and not the other. The most balanced development for a child may be going the middle way. The best result may come from combining both nurture and nature in a child’s development.
The thing is, the “nurtu...
