Common Types of Abuse among School-Aged Children
School going children are among the most vulnerable group as far as child abuse is concerned. Some of the common types of child abuse suffered by school-going children include neglect, physical, psychological, and sexual abuse. Child neglect can be defined as an act of omission, and it is usually categorized into three different types, including physical, educational, and emotional negligence. Physical child abuse on the other hand is the infliction of an injury to a child out of physical aggression. Emotional abuse can be defined as any form of attitude, behavior, or act of omission that hinders children's mental health. Finally, child sex abuse refers to the sexual act involving an adult and a child. The sexual act can be penetration, rape, intercourse, oral sex, sodomy, or even rape (Maguire et al 2015).
Warning Signs, Physical and Emotional Assessment Findings Indicating Child Abuse
Symptoms of physical abuse or neglect can be detected through either physical or emotional assessments. Signs of physical abuse can be detected easily through physical assessments through which physical injuries such as bruises can be identified. Some of the physical indicators that can be used to recognize emotional abuse among children include prolonged vomiting or diarrhea and frequent psychosomatic complaints (Powell, 2003). Also, school-going children suffering from psychological abuse are likely to display behavioral changes such as severe developmental gaps and being overly compliant, among other behaviors. For cases of sexual abuse, physical indicators such as difficulty in walking can be used to detect the violation. On the contrary, poor self-esteem and lack of confidence are a perfect example of an emotional indicator of a child who is sexually abused. Cases of child neglect among school-going children can also be indicated through the frequent absence of the child from school.
