Introduction
Vygotsky’s theory of cognitive development is one of the most sought after theories of psychology in our century. The theory basis emphasis that culture is a key factor in the cognitive development of a child. It touches on how different periods in a child’s life are associated with their dominance in different activities.
Theoretical Assumptions
Vygotsky’s theory contains a couple of assumptions. Some of them are discussed below. The assumption that during child development, the child tends to internalize activities acquired from their social surrounding and begins using them in their own independent manner. There is also the assumption that a child tends to perform difficult tasks better if they are assisted by someone with more advanced skills (Morrow, p.136). According to Vygotsky, a child’s development can be assessed when the child is carrying out a task by themselves and when he is receiving help from an individual.
How does the theory fit into the literature and field, are there any alternative theories?
