Numerous factors and methods can help a student’s academic and personal success. According to Brown et al. (2014), students must take charge of their learning and develop a disciplined strategy to succeed. Self-regulated learners are students who understand how to take charge of their education. They understand and control their learning environment and thus know how to manage their learning. For example, a self-regulated learner understands proper time management, the best strategy for better learning acquisition, and reflects on the acquired knowledge. In addition to self-regulated learning, having a disciplined approach is essential for success. Students must persevere in following a routine and must exert effort to discipline themselves in doing so. Hence, there are learning techniques and strategies that students can learn and practice to achieve desirable results.
According to Brown et al. (2014), though there are ways how students will succeed, it is still expected for students to face difficulties during the learning process. Setbacks are a natural part of the learning process, and students should not be discouraged by the problems they will face. These setbacks are lessons that students learn after they have overcome the difficulties. As a result, the more they struggle, the more they master a particular content or topic. Furthermore, the authors recommend retrieval practice, spacing out retrieval practice, and interleaving different problem types as helpful learning strategies for students. The authors added other techniques, such as elaboration, generation, reflection, and calibration.
