Discourse Analysis
Discourse analysis is a method used in studying a language that explains how it shapes reality. The common approaches include variation analysis, conversation analysis, communication ethnography, interactional sociolinguistics, pragmatics, and speech arts theory. Besides, the features of sign language are turn-taking, conversational repair, discourse marker, constructing dialogue and action, cohesion and rhythm, rhyme, and repetition.
I noticed that deaf people consistently use turn-taking with overlaps. For example, an individual provides signs to another who does the same to the next person, and they know it is their tone after an individual withdraws. Deaf people use attention for effective communication, like waving, tapping, role shift, eye gaze, filling pauses, and repetition of signs.
I took a discourse analysis class in hearing class, CSULB, in 2020. However, I want to learn about ASL discourse analysis. In my opinion, deaf people can sign with overlaps but hearing people cannot do it.
