Connections between Psychology and Learning
Psychology and learning are closely related. Learning is simply the process of acquiring and making use of new knowledge. Making use of this new knowledge necessitates a change in the behavior and conduct of a person. On the other hand, psychology entails studying people’s behavior and how different aspects influence behavior. For learning to be successful, there is a need to understand how the human brain works from a young age to the age of an adult. For example, the mind of a four-year-old does not work the same way as the mind of an eight-year-old. The eight-year-old can process information much faster than the four-year-old. Understanding how the brain of each child works is crucial to teaching and influences how information is presented to either child.
Aside from helping to determine how teachers should approach children in different stages of development, psychology and learning are related in that psychology introduces theories and models that dictate the development of curriculums (Kim & Kwauk, 2017). The researchers note that the theories coined in psychology help guide teaching. Also, psychology and learning are connected through the aspect of motivation and its importance in the lives of students. As the study of how behavior can be influenced, psychology paves the way for teachers to adopt motivational strategies that can help enhance learning and performance (Lin-Siegler et al., 2016). The researchers note that the adoption and implementation of “psychologically informed instructional activities” have the power to influence performance and students’ motivation. The statement above highlights the importance of psychology in learning as well as the connectedness of the two.
