Inclusive Learning Practices in Early Childhood Education
Today, the world has become a global village and people from different cultures have to interact and co-exist respectfully. The level of diversity is high in schools as it is in the real world. Children from different walks of life have the same need for education, despite their cultural, linguistic, economic, or social differences. Providing an inclusive education for all children is fundamental in ensuring that they have access to quality, beneficial education. The first step towards providing an inclusive education is ensuring that teachers understand and adopt inclusive practices in the classroom. Yet, lack of understanding of inclusive practices is one of the factors hindering inclusive education, as revealed by Akalin, Demir, Sucuoglu, Bakkaloglu, and Iscen (2014) in their research on the needs of preschool teachers in providing inclusive learning. Thus, educators and policymakers need to ensure that schools adopt inclusive learning practices. Specifically, inclusive learning practices should be incorporated in early childhood education because they provide children with equal access to a general curriculum, thus improving academic outcomes. According to Sharp (2017), allowing diverse students to stay in the same classroom and work together while still giving them special instructions to meet their diverse needs is one of the inclusive learning practices that teachers can adopt. This way, all children will have access to a general classroom that accommodates all their differences.
Also, adopting inclusive learning practices ensures that students attain maximum academic success, even in the future. In a study examining how early childhood education contributed to students’ academic achievement, Gayden-Hence (2016) reveals that when children are exposed to a supportive and diverse early childhood education, they become successful in other stages of their education. This is in terms of their educational achievement and social competences. Further, early childhood education promotes success even in adulthood, especially in employment. An inclusive classroo...
