Oral language development is very crucial for ELLs because it has been linked to improved English reading comprehension. As revealed by Wright (2015), “the more English ELLs can speak and understand, the more they are able to comprehend what they read in English.” Ultimately, when ELLs have developed their oral language and can comprehend what they read in English, they will also be able to better listen to and understand spoken English from others. Further, oral language has been linked to improved quality of English writing. This is because spoken word enhances grammatical and vocabulary skills necessary for English writing.
