“There Are Distances Between Us” is presented to readers as one long paragraph. Why do you think the author makes this choice? What does she gain by deciding not to use paragraph breaks in telling this decidedly nonlinear personal story?
Near the middle of the essay, the author writes that her father “often said the United States is a great country because with enough persistence, with enough patience, a man can travel from one end to the other,” and that “he never wanted to take for granted that he could not be kept from any place he wanted to be.” How do you think the author feels about these ideas—does she agree or disagree, and how can you tell that she agrees or disagrees?
