V. Essay (12 points)
36) In “Ch. 1: Evolution and Culture,” from The Philosophy of Art by Stephen Davies, the author “explores the contrasts between two divergent stories” concerning A(a)rt’s origins. Considering our class readings, lectures, and discussions, please discuss the following:
1.) Briefly summarize/ describe each origin story (1 paragraph will suffice!).
2.) Imagine that you are the Executive Director of the North Carolina Museum of Art (so basically, you run the joint). Your market research indicates that your audience is split between those who subscribe to one belief about A(a)rts origin vs. those who subscribe to the other belief. How will you appeal to both types of audiences? (1-2 paragraphs)
Tips: Consider types of exhibits, how exhibits are presented, hosting events rather than just displaying the art…etc. Don't be afraid to be imaginative and creative!
