Nasty and Tame Problems
Different problems require different approaches in solving them depending on the causative agents of the problem. Problem solving skills require a lot of critical and analytical thinking. There are two major types of problems. The first problem is the nasty problem that is often complex in nature and cannot be easily perceived at once. Such problems require a detailed exploration to find the ultimate solution through either scientific experiments or testing of possible solutions. Such problems include the HIV/AIDS virus that has no a definite cure of the disease. On the other hand, tame problems tend to have specific approaches or specific answers that are required. This is very common in mathematical problems that have a definite correct answer.
Tame
In March this year, I had prepared myself to receive five friends whom we had gone through the same high school and they were also close friends. I began planning the meeting four weeks earlier so as to avoid inconveniences. I was planning everything for five people only and did not bother to give a second thought. I organized the number of seats, amount of food and I had prior knowledge of the foods that they loved and so I hired a chef who prepared the food in the morning and later he left after making sure that everything was in place. I had put everything in place on the day of the meeting and I was eagerly waiting to receive the friends. However, as I waited for them, something went wrong. One of the friends, John called me and informed me that they had met other high schoolmates as they were coming and they had agreed to also join them in the meeting and so their number had increased to twenty. I had prepared myself to receive five friends but their number had increased to twenty. The above problem put me in a situation where I did not know what to exactly do. The above problem can be classified as a tame problem since for one to solve the problem; you require considering the previous incidences or occasions where you have received more than five friends.
Solution
So that I would arrive at a solution to the problems that have been mentioned above, I had to identify the issue. In the tame problem, the issue was the preparation for the meeting. I had not thought that the number would increase and I limited the resources so that they would fit five people. In solving the problem, I had to recall the previous family meetings that we had had and how my parents were able to organize the meetings. I inquired from my mother and she informed me that she had a friend who would come over and help in...
