The Newhouse School invited Shanti Das to the speaker series program to discuss navigating mental wellness in entertainment and entrepreneurship. Having been in the entertainment industry for thirty years, she talked about her experiences concerning mental health within the profession. Her passion is fueled by her experience in the entertainment industry and her father's death by suicide when she was seven months old. Shanti runs a non-profit program called 'silence the shame,' which helps create awareness around mental health.
She began by narrating her rise in the entertainment industry, where she worked for a smaller company before moving to New York City to work for a bigger company in a more corporate setting. Despite long working hours at the smaller company, she experienced more social support as the company was more family oriented. Although moving to a bigger company and rising through the ranks of her career ought to have been enviable, it is here that Shanti was more mentally and physically exhausted. She had to put up with long working hours, harsh bosses, and a toxic working environment. Her sister encouraged her to go to therapy, and it helped her get through that mentally exhausting phase. She quit her job at the height of her career when she began contemplating suicide.
Shanti stated that social support is very important, and we should all have people we can run to when we are mentally exhausted. It could be friends or family that help us get our life together.
