Reflection Paper on Caillou Series
Caillou is Canadian educational television series for children whose first episode was aired on 15 September 1997 and the final one on 3 October 2010. It is based on a children's book by Hélène Desputeaux. In the series, the protagonist is a four-year-old boy called Caillou, fascinated by the world surrounding him (Desputeaux, 2017). Other major characters that help Caillou develop the five seasons series plot are his family, friends, and neighbors. This paper uses the transfer and constructivism theories to discuss why Caillou's behavior impacts children's behavior.
The protagonist's behavior in the series, Caillou, who is named after the series, has raised a lot of concern and debate globally over its influence on children's behavior. All the characters in the series do not mind Caillou's behavior. He misbehaves, but his parents, instead of punishing and warning him, treat him well. For example, when Caillou covers the kitchen floor with mud, his father offers to take him to the library while his mother cleans up the mud (Hopper, 2017). This, among other examples, shows how the series promotes negative behavior in society.
The transfer theory claims that materials learning can influence another set's learning later (Tripuraneni, Jordan & Jin, 2020). Learning is a contagious process that often draws expertise from different life instances and life experiences. For example, a person who watches several TV shows about divorces is likely to transfer it to their lives and file for a divorce. This transfer principle is visible in the series Caillou. The series primarily targets children who easily believe what they watch and want to be treated the same way. This means they transfer what they watch on the show to real life.
