Using Digital Games to Improve Children’s Math Skills
During my early years of education, I experienced difficulties in math, particularly multiplication and division. Digital games provide a more effective way of teaching these concepts. Digital games can be played online or through an app and can easily be integrated into the current curriculum. Digital games compliment the paper-and-pencil instruction model. Game-based maths learning boosts the students’ reasoning ability, helps them in understand underlying concepts and encourages them to find creative solutions to math problems that are complex (Madeline, 2017).
Researchers and educators say that games not only help to improve students’ math skills but they also enjoy maths more. The philosophy behind digital math games is that “If you don't like something, you're definitely not going to do well in it. And if you don't think you're going to do well, you're definitely not going to do well” (Madeline, 2017). Students have the option of playing against each other or against the computer.
