Interpersonal communication refers to how two or more individuals exchange ideas, information, and feelings through non-verbal or verbal methods. People might communicate face-to-face, using body language, gestures, and facial expressions. The paper discusses three interpersonal communication principles and how they can be used to support a new employee. Additionally, it defines self-concept and perception without forgetting to show how each of them impacts interpersonal communication.
The three primary principles of interpersonal communication are irreversible, inescapable, and contextual. Inescapable means that people are always communicating even when they are silent (Singh, 2014). Interpersonal communication occurs by using tone of voice, posture, gesture, and facial expression. In that light, a new employee should understand that their reaction to things or dressing style in an organization sends a message to others, which can influence professional and personal relationships. Irreversible means that spoken words cannot be taken back. When one says something, whether intentionally or unintentionally, it affects his or her relationships with others. For example, assume that an individual says abusive words during a firm's conflict.
Although one might apologize, those hurt might never forget the abuses. A new employee should know that communication is contextual. In other words, people do not communicate in a vacuum. Interpersonal communication is influenced by psychological, environmental, cultural, relational, and situational contexts (Singh, 2014). For instance, a new employee should address his or her bosses formally while at work. However, the professional or personal relationship should be different in an informal setting, such as celebrating the company's success.
Self-concept entails the overall idea of who an individual thinks she or he is, affecting how a person interacts with others. For instance, some people might have expectations, fear, or doubt others during communicatio...
