Human interactions and relationships have changed drastically since the introduction of the internet and the formation of online communities. With globalization, the aspect of time, space, and location has been reduced. People can communicate and interact anytime, regardless of their location. The rise of online communities and social media has created a strong culture that almost all individuals worldwide use not only for business networks and commercial activities but also for personal interactions. Examples of social media platforms include Instagram (IG), Facebook (FB), Pinterest, Myspace, and Twitter. The social media platform is an evolution that is gradually changing how people interact with each other. This study aims to explain how social media has changed communication in interpersonal relationships, how the principles of interpersonal communication are affected by technological advancements, and how social media impacts self-presentation and personal identity.

Interpersonal relationships are deep and strong social affiliations or connections between two or more individuals. Examples of individuals in interpersonal relationships are loved ones, acquaintances, partners, or close friends. Moreover, it entails self-disclosure where individuals reveal their thoughts, reflections, and feelings to one another. Human beings communicate through tone, voice, facial expressions, eye contact, words, and body language. With all these aspects combined, communication becomes effective and complete.
