This reflection essay is based on two movies:
- Evaporating Borders (1hr 13 min)
- On the Bride’s Side/Io Sto Con La Sposa (1 hour 38 Min)
Your reflections should demonstrate your understanding of the weekly readings and the films you have watched in class. The point of this assignment is to engage in close reading of theoretical texts and apply them to the analysis of the films.

The topic of immigration has become a hot topic in the recent past. The focus has been on European and other western countries that have imposed strict policies on asylum seekers and refugees from the Middle East and Africa. Evaporating Borders (2014) and On the Bride’s Side films depict dehumanizing conditions that refugees face in the attempt to find asylum in western countries. The theme that emerges in these two films is how borders and the question of passports contribute to thousands of deaths of immigrants.
According to Sandra Ponzanesi’s article (2016), most shipwrecks that occur at seas are a contribution of how countries have become selfish when it comes to admitting refugees are fleeing persecution. Borders and passports have replaced the human aspect in people. On the Bride’s Side further explains the dehumanizing status of borders and passports by indirectly explaining how different people are forced to forge strategies of evading scrutiny on borders to cross to safety.
