Response Journal: media effect

To be successful writing up the media effects response journal, you need to participate regularly to class discussions and stay current with reading schedule. You also need to find ONE current computer game or children’s media program distributed with reputable media outlets as material of your critical analysis.

We define a “current” program as a program commercially released no earlier than Jan 1st, 2013. If you wish to discuss a program released earlier than that, your journal must explain something “new” about this program, such as a newly published analysis, news report, etc that is related to this old program.

We define “reputable media outlets” as media outlets or computer game designers usually with national circulation or influence. PBS Kids, Disney Channel and Pixel Movies can be good examples.

Specifically, you are expected to discuss in your response paper the following:
1) What are the four levels of effects media content can have on the general public? Please use one or two sentences to briefly explain each of them.

2) Summary of the program/computer game
-describe the general story line, major characters, etc;
-describe the owner of the program and its commercial impact;
-describe any comments, criticisms or concerns published to date relating to this program/game.

3) Identify possible positive/negative effects from your own perspective on at least TWO levels with the media effect frame;
-on each of your chosen level, explain how the game/program could have been redesigned to respond to the identified effects;

4) In view of the before mentioned effect, articulate one or two considerations a responsible individual should bear in mind as a media consumer.

Journal needs to be 900-1,200 words, typed, with one-inch margin, Time New Roman font 12. Journal will be collected on-line through CANVAS assignment link.

What are the four levels of effects media content can have on the general public? Please use one or two sentences to explain each of them briefly
The four levels of effects media content can have on the general public include behavioral, psychological, social, and moral effects.
Behavioral effects entail how media content impacts or influences the behavior of the general public. This means that media content could influence the way people behave.
Psychological effects mainly involve the effects to the brain or how media content seems to be influencing the thinking of the general public.
Social effects include the influence media content has on certain social topics. For example, it could be the effects media content has on gender and racial stereotyping.
Lastly, good effects include the way media content influences one’s understanding of what is right and what is wrong. For example, a media program could be influencing people’s views on something and making them believe it is wrong or right.
Summary of the program/computer game
This paper focuses on the television program called Odd Squad. The main characters of this show are Olive and Otto, who are intelligent kids. Olive and Otto make use of math in their investigations which center on strange occurrences in their town. The main goal of the show is to glorify mathematics and to showcase its infinite ability even in the fight against crime. The two employees, Otto, and Olive steal the show in the first season but are replaced by Olympia and Otis in the second season. Well, while these four could be the main characters, they are not the only cast members. Other people included in the film are employees of the organization and their names always start with letter O with only a single exception.
In the show, the agents are assigned their cases by Ms. O who is their boss. Once this happens, the agents then travel using a system of interconnected tubes and get to their destinations where they conduct their investigation. Upon reaching the destination, the agents then make use of mathematical principles to find solutions to whichever problem they find. However, and this happens often, the agents never solve their problem on the ground, and have to travel back to their headquarter or what they call a bathroom. Here, a fictional channel of communication opens up, and the agents find themselves with all the answers they needed. However, time and again, the agents are forced to deal with difficult scenarios, especially when villains make use of mathematical tricks which make it a lot harder to solve the cases.
The program is owned or was created by Timothy McKeon and Adam Peltzman and produced by The Fred Rogers Productions (IMDB, 2014). Associate producers include Sinking Ship Entertainment, TVOKids, and Ici Radio-Canada Tele. Odd Squad debuted on November 26th, 2014 in the United States and Canada and premiered on PBS Kids and TVOKids respectively. The show has had tremendous success, having been nominated for several awards, including a Daytime Emmy Award, Canadian Screen Awards, Parents’ Choice Awards, among others. So far, the show has won several awards, and it remains to be seen whether i...
