The ability to communicate effectively in the English language is essential for immigrants living abroad; however, immigrants find it difficult to communicate in an unfamiliar culture and language. Chinese adults face difficulties in learning English as a second language due to the cultural difference and might face challenges like stereotypes. Although adult ESL learning is different for children, in some aspect adult may have some advantage over children. Being old is not always advantageous in learning the second language. During the process of learning English as a second language, Chinese adult will definitely encounter problems. This research proposal presents several kinds of literature that discuss the challenges and problems facing Chinese adult learners and present solutions for some of the identified problems.
1. An article by Wu, R., & Wu, R. (2014). Title Challenges of Adults in Learning English as a Second Language: Focus on Adult Education in China, review the importance of English as a second language and its importance in Chinese education and how it plays an important role in the development of China and the adults themselves. In a study, the article presents a study to discover the challenges and problems facing Chinese adults' ESL learning and presents solutions to these problems.
2. Similarly, Butler, Y. G. (2015). English language education among young learners in East Asia: reviews the current trend in teaching foreign languages to children as compared to adults. The research presents how second language education in East Asian countries like China, Japan-South Korea, and Taiwan in the new area. The article further reviews peer-reviewed literature on English education among young learners and adults in these countries to identify major policy related policy concerns that are affecting the effective implementation of English education as a second language in Asian countries. According to the author, teaching foreign languages if well researched can have potential in making a significant contribution to the development of these countries.
3. in another article by Kramsch, C. (2014). Teaching foreign languages in an era of globalization: Introduction.
The author presents the effects of globalization on education, citing that globalization has changed the condition under which foreign language is taught, learned and used. According to the article, globalization has greatly destabilized the norms and conventions that foreign language educators and learners relied upon to help learners be successful use of the language. With such changes, the article calls for a more reflective, interpretive, historical grounded and politically engagement of both young and older population engagement of pedagogy used for teaching of foreign language. The article further explores how such pedagogy can be conceived by the new generation of second language learners.
