Contemporary New Media Technology Review - AWS Cloud Storage
Introduction
The origin of computers can be traced back to the early 19th century but it is in the 20th and the 21st centuries that the world of computing made tremendous strides toward the automation of almost every aspect of human living. The current era of the industrial revolution, the 4th industrial revolution, has seen the emergence of cutting-edge technologies that allow humans to work alongside computerized systems more efficiently. Industry 4.0 technologies help in bridging the gap between physical systems and digital systems, leading to widespread automation. Cloud computing and cloud concepts are at the forefront of industry 4.0 technologies and have led to the emergence of numerous cloud service vendors available in the market today. Amazon's Web Service (AWS) is the world's leading cloud service from Amazon that provides various functions, one of them being cloud storage service.
Cloud Storage Service
Cloud computing is an umbrella term to refer to the provision of all computing and storage services remotely over the internet. Cloud storage service is a segment of cloud computing where storage services and databases are made available to the users over the internet. Unlike a situation where there are physical servers and physical storage devices such as hard disks, cloud storage services provide databases as a service, and the user only pays for a service that they want. With Amazon AWS, cloud storage services are broken down into three: Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), Elastic Block Storage (EBS), and Elastic File System (EFS) (Daher & Hajjdiab, 2018). Amazon S3 is the most popular of the AWS cloud storage services and is an object storage service where customers can store all sorts of data in any amount, allowing them to leverage features like scalability, durability, security, availability, and performance (AWS, n.d.).
All cloud storage services bear similar characteristics such as being scalable, secure, and elastic, capable of storing data of any capacity. This makes it a service for consumers ranging from individuals’ data, small to large enterprises, government entities, and even large multinational corporations. Cloud storage services have been designed to support the storage of data from modern websites including social media sites, e-commerce sites, and video streaming services with vast amounts of data of all kinds. Amazon.com, Netflix, and Facebook.com are some of the few websites that utilize the Amazon S3 storage services to hold their web content (Athow, 2020). The cloud service providers are responsible for all the underlying hardware and software features that facilitate the cloud storage services. The consumer only needs internet access and a cloud service account to access the services that often come at a fee.
Historical Overview and its Impact
Data storage has had a great deal of history dating back to the early days of punch cards and the Analytical Engine invented by Charles Babbage. The most notable milestones in the history of modern-day storage technologies include the invention of the Magnetic Storage D...
