The traveler comes across an ethical challenge whose decision may have impacted their chances of survival. In organizations, managers are forced into difficult decisions where they have to choose between the survival of the company and loyalty to their workers. Layoffs are increasing due to challenging economic times, as executive managers feel like they have no other option. Concerning the parable of the sadhu, this essay will look to discuss the ethical nature of layoffs in workplaces.
Who is responsible for the wellbeing of the sadhu? The responsibility of caring for the Indian holy man falls to the traveler as the New Zealander that finds him but is not willing to wait. For a corporation, higher management is always looking for means to engage in cost control and business realignment. The duty is given to a manager who has to decide which workers will go and those that will remain. Laying off workers is not illegal but it does create an ethical conundrum due to conflicting corporate cultures and values. The layoff decisions are understandable from an economic point of view but can leave workers feeling dispensable and unappreciated. The only question is if the management is ready to bear the consequence of such a decision.
