The Bhopal disaster of 3rd December 1984 from a gas leakage from a pesticide plant in Bhopal resulted in adverse effects such as thousands of deaths, health complications, and mental/physical challenges on children born years later. The Union Carbide pesticide plant was surrounded by shantytowns, which resulted in the disaster affecting more than 600,000 people who were exposed to poisonous gases after the leakage. Watching the lecture video and accompanying articles has changed my thinking on various safety standards across countries. They made realize that most environmental disasters like the Bhopal one are events that can be identified and prevented early enough.
