The textbook’s modules 13 and 15 and case 6 on McDonald’s in India – Not a Happy Meal has significantly helped me understand several important things about global trade and its challenges. Currently, many businesses are entering the international market, but only a few are successful in the long run. The primary thing that matters the most is the strategy that a company uses to enter the global trade. I have learned that a firm might use joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions, and franchising to enter the global market. All these strategies need extensive market research for an organization to choose the right partner. In other words, the firm ought to select partners that improve its core competencies to gain and sustain its competitive advantage in the international market. McDonald’s operations in India were unsuccessful due to the wrong choice of a business partner in its joint venture.
I have learned that it is easier for a company, such as McDonald’s, to succeed in providing products and services in its home country compared to international markets. McDonald’s has been known as one of the largest franchisers in the world. The fast-food restaurant started its operations in 1955 in San Bernardino, California, and has over 38,000 branches in more than 100 countries. However, the success of this franchiser has not come easy. The greatest challenge that McDonald’s has encountered is adapting its products and services to different target audiences. For instance, when McDonald’s began its operations in India, the fast-food restaurant was obliged to change its menu to align with the cultural beliefs and norms of Indians (Beamish, Gupta, & Sethi, 2019). In that light, it provided vegetarian products on its menu. Some of the things that have enabled McDonald’s to succeed in the global trade are partnering with businesses that understand their target customers well since it helps in products and services modification to meet the dynamic clients’ needs...
